Every survivor deserves to be heard, believed, respected, and supported.

People with disabilities can experience domestic violence and sexual assault just like anyone else. In some situations, however, an abusive person may use a survivor's disability or dependence on certain supports as another means of control.

Abuse may include withholding medication, interfering with mobility equipment, controlling money or transportation, preventing someone from communicating with others, threatening to remove care or assistance, or using a disability to isolate, intimidate, or manipulate someone.

For some survivors, the person causing harm may also be someone they depend on for everyday assistance. This can make reaching out for help feel especially complicated.

You deserve information and support that respects your individual circumstances. C.A.R.A. can provide confidential support, help you explore available options, and connect you with appropriate resources.

For individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing, C.A.R.A. has access to TTY telephone communication.

You do not have to know exactly what you need before contacting us. Sometimes the first step is simply having someone listen.

Additional support and information are available. Download our full Survivors with Disabilities resource for more information about recognizing disability-related abuse, safety considerations, and resources available to survivors.
