A safety plan is not about telling you what to do. It is about helping you think ahead and identify options that may help you feel safer.

Safety planning can be helpful whether you are currently experiencing abuse, thinking about leaving, have already left, or are concerned that a situation may become unsafe.

Your plan may include identifying people you trust, safe places you could go, transportation options, important phone numbers, and ways to access medications, identification, financial information, keys, or other essential belongings.

You may also want to think about safety at home, work, school, or other places you regularly visit. If children are involved, a safety plan can consider their needs as well. Technology, social media, location sharing, and communication with the person causing harm may also be part of the conversation.

There is no one-size-fits-all safety plan. What matters is creating something that reflects your life, your concerns, and your needs.

C.A.R.A. advocates can help you think through your options in a confidential and supportive environment. You remain in control of the decisions you make.
