Technology can help us stay connected, but it can also be used as a way to monitor, intimidate, or control someone.
Phones, social media accounts, email, smart devices, location-sharing apps, vehicles, and online accounts can sometimes provide another person with information about where you are, who you are communicating with, or what you are doing.
If you are concerned that someone may be monitoring your technology, consider your safety before changing passwords, turning off location services, or removing connected devices. In some situations, sudden changes may alert the person who is monitoring you.
When possible, you may want to use a device or account that the other person cannot access when looking for information or reaching out for help. Reviewing privacy settings, account access, shared passwords, location permissions, and connected devices can also be helpful when it is safe to do so.
Digital safety is different for every person and every situation. You do not have to figure it out by yourself. A C.A.R.A. advocate can talk through your concerns with you and help you consider options that make sense for your circumstances.
